Rico J. Puno was still energetic in his last media appearance

It is a sad day for the Philippine showbiz and music industry when they found out that OPM legend Rico J Puno’s sudden passing. He succumbed at the age of 65 after having a long fight against his heart illness.

Despite undergoing several surgeries back in 2015 and 2017, the public and his fans were still shocked with the news since he has an upcoming concert this November. In his last media appearance, he appeared with Giselle Sanchez and Marissa Sanchez to promote their upcoming concert titled “Music and Laughter: Sana Tatlo Ang Puso Ko” that was supposed to be held at the Soilare’s The Theatre.

During the press conference, Rico assured his fans that his condition is still good and he is in great shape to perform and entertain. He even said that he is so excited to come back to the stage and sing some of his hits that made him a household name like May Bukas Pa, Sorry Na Pwede Ba, and Magkasuyo Buong Gabi.

According to his sister-in-law Anna Puno, Rico was even excited to be part of the ABS-CBN Station ID commercial.

Before his passing, Rico was rushed to St. Lukes Medical Center in Taguig after complaining that he was feeling something that is not good. His family who was with him in his last day said he was still jolly while having his dinner. He complained about difficulty in breathing after that. The doctors tried to revive him but unfortunately, the Lord decided that his time is up at around one in the morning.

His fans and celebrity stars sent their condolences to Rico’s family including Gary Valenciano, Janno Gibbs, and Lea Salonga.

The New York Times and other American newspapers also wrote an obituary about him and described him as the pioneer of Soul music in the Philippines. They also said that Rico was known in the US for having his Filipino take on some of the hit songs in the US.

Besides for his singing career that stretched for some decades, Rico also ventured to acting career and public service. He even filed for his certificate of candidacy as a re-electionist councillor in Makati City.
